John Fox wasn’t unemployed for long after parting ways with the Denver Broncos, as he agreed to become the Chicago Bears‘ head coach on Friday.
The Bears made things official via Twitter:
Mike Klis of The Denver Post first reported the news of Fox’s hiring.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports confirmed the report and noted the length of the deal:
Fox crafted game plans to win with Tim Tebow under center during his first year in Denver and then benefited from the exploits of all-time great Peyton Manning running the offense. The veteran coach is fresh off four straight division titles as he bids to help the Bears reach similar heights.
Arthur Arkush of USA Today noted that this is the first time in a long time that the Bears have hired someone with previous NFL head coaching experience:
Fox wanted to hit the ground running when the situation with the Broncos didn’t work out, via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post weighed in on Fox’s exit from the Mile High City despite a 46-18 record in the regular season:
An unusually slow process to fill coaching vacancies around the league gave multiple suitors the opportunity to pursue Fox, who was arguably the most proven candidate on the open market with the best recent results.
Bears lineman Kyle Long was excited for the move:
One of Fox’s biggest decisions in 2015 will revolve around the quarterback position following Jay Cutler‘s disappointing 2014 campaign. Bleacher Report NFL Analysts Chris Simms and Jonathan Vilma discussed what Fox’s hiring means for Cutler’s future in Chicago:
Fox employed hot head coaching candidates in offensive coordinator Adam Gase and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio in Denver. Del Rio took the head job with the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday. Fox’s staff in Denver suggests he has what it takes to field an exceptional one in Chicago.
As long as Chicago has competent quarterback play from Jay Cutler, the transition to the Fox era should be a smooth one, as his reputable defensive genius will aid its efforts to turn things around in 2015.
