Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox will be able to resume his football career after suffering what appeared to be a serious back injury on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
It’s some rare good news in an otherwise forgettable week for the Bears.
Knox will undergo surgery to help stabilize a vertebra, which will hold him out for a couple months, according to Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times. But his prognosis is good once he fully recovers during the offseason.
The Bears were already dealing with a three-game losing streak and the arrest of Sam Hurd on drug charges heading into Sunday’s game. So when Knox went down in an awkward fashion early in the game, it was another blow to an already reeling team.
Chicago proceeded to get blown out by the Seahawks, 38-14. The result was secondary to Knox’s long-term health, though. So the entire organization will be happy to hear he should be back to his usual self next season barring any setbacks.
Knox finishes the season with a team-leading 727 receiving yards on 37 catches. He also caught two touchdowns. At just 25 years old, there’s still a lot of time for development as a receiver for the Abilene Christian product.
That’s probably the last thing on his mind right now, however, as he focuses on recovering from a scary injury. He’ll gladly take a few months of rehab over the other life-altering options which were initially feared.
As for the Bears, they can now rest a little easier as the team prepares to play the Green Bay Packers on Christmas night.
