The injury to Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox was one of those injuries that you never want to see happen to a professional football player.
If you did not see the hit, Knox caught a pass from Caleb Hanie in the first quarter and started to make his way up the field. Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor poked the ball free from Knox’s hands. While Knox was making a diving attempt to retrieve the fumbled football, Seattle’s Anthony Hargrove bent Knox backwards with a hard hit.
Knox was back-boarded and carted off the field with his neck stabilized. Luckily for Knox, he was able to move his fingers while leaving the playing field.
According to ESPN.com-Chicago, Bears head coach Lovie Smith did not have an update on any timetable for Knox’s return.
“I have no idea. Right now, we’re just glad he’s OK and we’ll continue to monitor him, evaluate him. That’s about all I can say right now,” Smith.
If you have Knox on your team, you have no choice but to drop the Bears wide receiver. This type of injury isn’t one where you see the player bounce back in a week or two.
In that same ESPN.com-Chicago piece, they are reporting that Knox is going to have back surgery, and has total movement in his arms and legs.
He has a “positive prognosis for his career and quality of life,” according to the Bears. The surgery is scheduled for Monday.
“He has total movement throughout his body, has total use of all his extremities, which is good,” coach Lovie Smith said. “We’re doing tests right now. He has total movement. He’s not paralyzed or anything.”
Thankfully for Knox, he will be able to get back onto the football field, if he chooses to. The hit was very dangerous, and is one of those bad accidents that happens in football.
Knox is done for the year, and you should have been looking for another receiver before the hit. Stay away from any of the Bears receivers, and look to see who is available on your waiver wire.
