Josh McCown: What QB’s Signing Means for Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have signed backup quarterback Josh McCown—a transaction made as insurance for the team’s playoff push.
Per ProFootballTalk.com’s Josh Alper, “As expected, the Bears have brought back quarterback Josh McCown to serve as a third quarterback on the team’s 53-man roster.”
Jay Cutler may not be cleared to play on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers after suffering a concussion on Sunday against the Houston Texans. The Chicago Sun-Times‘ Rick Morrissey reports:
We won’t know for several days whether Cutler will be able to play Monday night against the 49ers in San Francisco. Cutler canceled his Monday radio show because he couldn’t be certain if he would be himself or Dr. Ruth.
If Cutler can’t go in Week 11, backup quarterback Jason Campbell will start. If Campbell were to get knocked out with an injury against the 49ers, God forbid, the Bears would have another capable quarterback behind him who can keep the offense from falling completely apart.
McCown was the No. 3 quarterback last season for the Bears. When Cutler went down last season, Caleb Hanie failed to keep the team in playoff contention, compiling a record of 2-4.
When head coach Lovie Smith finally decided to roll with McCown, he managed to split his two starts—losing to the Green Bay Packers and beating the Minnesota Vikings.
Given the fact that Cutler has been injury-prone the past couple of seasons, it was wise for the Bears to bring McCown onto the roster. He is a veteran player with experience and some chemistry with this team, and if the Bears get hit by a worst-case scenario like they did last year, he’s good enough to win a game or two in a pinch.
McCown won’t likely play a snap this season, but if the Bears fall onto hard times, he’ll be there to keep the offense from turning into a punching bag for opposing defenses.
