Let’s Call a Spade a Spade: The Chicago Bears Stink

I tried posting this article right after the first half of Sunday’s game, but for some reason it didn’t post.
It made a lot of sense at the time, and even after watching the second half “run” they made, it still rings true in my head.
The running game is non-existent. The offensive line might as well just lay down after each snap. The wide receivers can’t get open downfield because no defense has to respect the Bears running game.
Besides, the Bears don’t even run the ball enough for teams to even think they are going to run the ball, so all defenses do is prevent our deep passing threat, which is all our receivers really are.
And, the defense…well, the defense is pathetic. After having 14 sacks in their first four games, the Bears have mustered a mighty total of two in the past four games. Where has the pass rush gone?
It is almost as if the Bears have become a completely different defensive team after the bye week. Or, maybe they just overachieved in their victory over the Steelers, and they are now showing everyone what their true colors are.
I do not know what to think of the Bears right now, but I do know that I am not looking at a good team.
They seem to be a team that will put together a good drive here and there, but never pull it together for all four quarters of a game.
And, without having a first- and second-round pick in next year’s draft, and having owners that don’t seem to be willing to land the big free agents, I’m not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel here for quite some time.
I will admit that Devin Hester has been a bright spot in his play, but he’s definitely not the type of player who will lead a team to elite status. He needs an awful lot of help, and he’s just not getting it right now.
They have holes at just about every position, and that type of patchwork takes time to work itself out. And, with the Vikings, Saints, Cowboys, Falcons, Eagles, Giants and Cardinals seemingly ahead of them on the talent level, I can’t exactly say when the Bears will return to elite status in the NFC.
We all had high hopes for this season, but who doesn’t in July and August? I’m sure the Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Oakland fans all saw “potential” in their teams’ rosters.
But, with that hope dwindling down and reality settling in, where do we go from here?
I’m not giving up on the Bears, but with a less than favorable schedule coming up (SF, Philly, Green Bay, Minny twice, and Baltimore), I’m not even sure they can end the season above .500.
With the way they are playing now, I can see them losing to St. Louis.
Let’s hope something kicks into gear in the coming weeks, otherwise it’s going to get even harder to watch.
