Wilson May Start Season on Physically Unable to Perform List

Head coach John Fox confirmed Wilson may be on the PUP list when the regular season rolls around, according to Kevin Fishbain of Pro Football Weekly. Fox also said it was a refracture of the 23-year-old’s left foot, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, the same injury that resulted in him finishing the season on injured reserve last year.

He’ll undergo surgery Monday, according to Finley. If he is moved to the reserve/PUP list heading into the regular season, he would be forced to miss the team’s first six games.

The injury is a major setback for Wilson, who is fighting for a role on the Bears in 2016. Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White, the team’s 2015 No. 7 overall pick who missed all of last season with a stress fracture in his shin, are locked in as the team’s starters out wide, while Eddie Royal will slide into the slot role.

That leaves Wilson battling with Marc Mariani, Josh Bellamy, Deonte Thompson, Cameron Meredith and Daniel Braverman for the fourth receiver role.

Wilson played well in 2015 when injuries beset the wideout position in Chicago, accumulating 28 receptions for 464 yards and a score in 11 games. He certainly has upside at wide receiver, though to separate himself from the team’s deep crop of wideouts this offseason, he likely would have had to prove he could contribute on special teams as well.

He’s safe for now, as Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reported the Bears do not plan on releasing Wilson after this latest fracture. Still, his injury history—he also missed nine games in 2014 with a broken clavicle—is fast becoming a concern for the young Wilson.
