This is not a letter of apology from a Bears fan.

We, as Bears fans, will not apologize for a touchdown that wasn’t due to a confusing rule. We won’t apologize for Jay Cutler interceptions wiped out by pass-interference penalties.

We won’t apologize for Todd Collins’ four interceptions yesterday at Carolina and winning in spite of them.

And we certainly won’t apologize for three of our wins being against teams that won no more than one game (Panthers, Cowboys, and Lions).

We’re here. We’re 4-1. Get used to it.

For all the Monday Morning Quarterbacks who are wondering how the Bears could possibly be tied for the best record in the NFL, I have a simple answer: we’re a good team.

How do good teams win in the NFL? Any way they can.

When something fails for a good NFL team struggles in a game, another aspect preserves the victory with a spectacular performance. For instance, if a team’s rushing offense has a bad day, the passing offense steps up and wins the game for the team.

In Chicago’s case today, it was vice versa. Jay Cutler, who has the NFL’s third-best quarterback rating (102.2), could not play against the Panthers due to a concussion.

In his absence, Todd Collins started. After his fourth interception of the game, Caleb Hanie took over at quarterback.

Both quarterbacks combined for 51 yards passing. Four interceptions and 51 passing yards? And the Bears won this game?

Yes they did, thanks to Matt Forte. After running for a combined 108 yards in Chicago’s first three wins, Forte took off for 166 yards and two touchdowns, including a 68-yard score in the first quarter.

Forte had some help from the Bears’ defense in the 23-6 victory over Carolina. The sixth-ranked defense in the NFL allowed only 147 yards of total offense from the Panthers.

Despite being the No. 6 defense in the NFL, the Bears’ unit can slip up at times as well. Against the Packers, it allowed Aaron Rodgers to complete 34-of-45 passes for 316 yards.

But the Chicago defense forced timely turnovers to give the Bears the victory, with the help of 16-of-27 passing for 221 yards by Cutler.

Football is a team sport. When someone struggles, his teammates must have his back.

Through the season’s first five games, the Chicago Bears have had each other’s back.

No apology needed here.
