NFL Free Agency 2011: Why Would Chicago Bears Not Pursue Randy Moss?

On NFL.com Thursday, Randy Moss‘s agent, Joel Segal, was busy talking up his client.

“Randy has been working out, two-a-days, all spring and summer in West Virginia,” Segal said. “He is determined, motivated and quite frankly has a huge chip on his shoulder. Whatever team ends up getting Randy, they’re going to know they’re getting the old Randy Moss. He’s not just coming in to be on the team, he’s going to be Randy Moss—a difference maker.”

Take it with a healthy grain of sea salt, folks, for Segal is just doing his job. This is what he gets paid for. Of course, he has plenty of skin in the game.

Yet regardless of the shape that Moss is in—whether it’s square, round or even rectangular—there is no denying that the Chicago Bears need a wide receiver. Moss is one of those, and he’s a free agent.

Naturally, the question must be asked: Do the Bears have any interest in bringing Moss to Chicago?

Now, my first inclination is to say no. Knowing how the Bears work, and judging by their lack of interest in Plaxico Burress, I highly doubt that want to pay for something this risky.

But I say, why not?

What if Moss truly is revitalized and motivated to perform? Sure, he’s 34, but he could have another big season left in the tank.

The last time he was motivated was in 2009 with New England. Moss finished with 83 receptions for 1,264 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In 2007, he had 23 TDs and almost 1,500 yards.

Look, I realize that Moss is a polarizing figure. Like Notre Dame or the New York Yankees, people either love the guy or can’t stand him.

And personally, I am not a big fan of the petulance and the turmoil he causes at times.

But if he can perform anywhere near the levels that he did just two years ago, he will help the Bears. And I’m all about helping the Bears win.

Yes, I know that Moss had future Hall of Famer Tom Brady throwing him the ball in New England. But in Chicago, he would have a strong-armed QB who can at least get the ball to him in Jay Cutler.

Admit it, Bears fans, it doesn’t make sense to acquire a talent like Cutler and then not give him the weapons he needs to be successful.

Meanwhile, are there better alternatives out there? Perhaps. But they all carry some risk.

Either you have to overspend, or, as in the case of Sidney Rice, there is a significant injury concern.

I just want the Bears to bring in someone who can help this offense. And I just happen to believe that Moss could be that someone.

Why not?
