Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler can’t seem to stop grinning after his team’s 35-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks yesterday.
In only his second year with the team, Cutler has led the Bears to a third round playoff spot, where they will battle the rival Green Bay Packers for a place in the 2011 Super Bowl.
Cutler has another reason to be smiling today, as his success with the Bears has helped to prove just how capable he is of taking a team “all the way” to his former team, the Denver Broncos.
Cutler parted ways with the Broncos after he became aware of certain activities that were taking place without his knowledge regarding his future with the team.
Back in April of 2009, sports news headlines spotlighted Cutler after the Denver Broncos traded him to the Chicago Bears for QB Kyle Orton and draft picks. This came to be after mounting tensions between Cutler and then-head coach of the Denver Broncos Josh McDaniels had finally come to a head.
Cutler and McDaniels’ feud began when McDaniels attempted to trade Cutler behind his back to the New England Patriots for QB Matt Cassel. Long story short, the deal fell through, and Cassel ended up going to Kansas City to play for the Chiefs instead.
When Cutler caught wind of what McDaniels was doing, he became upset and confronted him about the situation. The two eventually had a meeting to discuss any differences and/or misunderstandings, but in the end failed to see eye to eye.
“I went in there with every intention of solving the issue, being a Bronco, moving forward as a Bronco,” Cutler said. “We weren’t in there but about 20 minutes, [McDaniels] did most of the talking and as far as I’m concerned, he made it clear he wants his own guy,” Cutler stated after his meeting with McDaniels.
Cutler went on to say, “Before this trade for Cassel thing ever came up, in the two weeks or so I had spent with McDaniels, he was basically telling me that he came to Denver because he wanted to coach me and that we needed to trust each other,” Cutler said. “He’s never been critical to me. But trust now? How can I trust him now?”
Soon after his falling-out with Coach McDaniels, Cutler instructed his agent to make a formal request for a trade. In the end, Cutler got what he wanted and left both McDaniels and the Denver Broncos without turning back.
The rest is all history now, as Cutler has found a new home in Chicago, leaving all of his doubtful critics in Denver dumbfounded.
