NFL Rumors: Chicago Bears Devin Hester Lobbies for Redskins WR Santana Moss

Devin Hester was blunt when approached by the media to find out who could help the Bears’ offense. He wants Washington’s WR Santana Moss.

While many are thinking the Bears need a taller, more physical wideout, Hester doesn’t agree. Sure, our receivers are relatively small—they average about 5’11″—but to the Bears’ great return man, talent is more important.

“Anybody that can come in and help out the team, I’m down for it. A guy like (Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana) Moss can come in and really help out a lot,” Hester said.

Hester was careful not to implicate the current wide receiver group, of which he is a part of, in his comments, saying that even if the Bears stand pat they will be fine. But he likes Moss and I don’t blame him.

“I’m hoping we can get him. If we don’t add anybody, I’m very comfortable with the guys we have now, to be honest with you. Everybody showed glimpses last season. We have the athletes to do it. Now, it’s just about going out there and getting it done.”

Moss caught 93 balls for 1,115 yards and six touchdowns for the Redskins in 2010. But he is 32.

Yet all free agent wideouts carry some risk, be it financial or otherwise. For example, as good as he looked in his late season comeback last year, the Vikings’ Sidney Rice had a serious hip injury and that could be cause for concern to anyone paying him big money.

Meanwhile, Mike Martz likes small, speedy receivers.

Likewise, you don’t know for sure what you would get with Plaxico Burress. Burress told ESPN radio’s WMVP-AM (1000) in Chicago that the Bears are one of his top three choices.

But the Bears don’t appear to be very interested in Burress unless he comes very cheaply. In fact, I don’t expect them to sign Burress or Rice.

So could Moss be a reality for the Bears? He is one of the players Chicago is looking at, so it is possible.

In addition to being a productive player, Moss is considered a positive locker room presence.

All of this may not matter if Moss quickly re-signs with the Redskins. They are said to be his first option, and The Washington Post reported Moss is looking for either a two- or three-year deal at about $5 million per season.

One way or another, I feel the Bears do need to add a wideout to the mix. If it’s a number one, all the better. It just doesn’t make sense to have Jay Cutler at QB without weapons.

But don’t be surprised if the Bears decide not to bring in a big name, to the chagrin of many Bears fans like myself.
