NFL Week Seven: My Three Wishes

1. That the weather in London stays good

It is a known fact that, for all of the NFL’s hype about taking the game to England, the turf at Wembley Stadium is far from being up to NFL standard. In 2007 we had the mudbath that was the Dolphins/Giants game. Last year a sustained dry spell meant that the Steelers and Saints got to play on probably as good a surface as London can provide.

This year, the weather in England has been reasonably dry and mild, but there are rainclouds gathering. The British public have bought more tickets than ever before. It would be a shame if the weather now caused the pitch to fall apart again.

I’ve also got a purely selfish reason for wanting the weather to stay good. Wembley has to be the coldest modern stadium in the world. For some reason, the cold air seems to get trapped in the building, making London in October feel like Lambeau in mid-January. A warm sunny day would be much appreciated, thanks.

2. That the Bears could undo that Gaines Adams trade

Think about it. In the next two Drafts, the Bears now have no picks in either of the first two rounds. In the same Drafts, the Patriots have a total of seven first and second rounders. Who do you think needs that more?

This year, the Bears got lucky on two counts. With no first round pick, they managed to put together a reasonable Draft because they had so many compensatory picks in the later rounds. Then those picks, on the whole, came good. That’s not going to happen twice. If there’s a rebuilding going on in Chicago, it is looking a bit like the house of sticks, not bricks, that is being built.

3. That Jim Zorn would just accept defeat

Zorn is a decent man who has done very little wrong, but clearly he’s in a job that requires someone with an awful lot more experience than he has.

There are two franchises where it is almost acceptable to fail—Washington and Oakland—because of the conditions under which a head coach works. There’s no shame in giving up now, Jim. Time to let someone else sit on the bed of nails.
