BYU running back Harvey Unga was picked by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 2010 Supplemental Draft today.

Unga is a 6’1″, 244 pound running back who could also serve as a fullback in certain formations as well. It remains to be seen what role he will play for the Bears.

Supposedly Unga violated BYU’s honor code after allegedly having premarital sex with his girlfriend, Unga will now be traveling to the Windy City to help improve Chicago’s offensive attack.

Already on the roster are Matt Forte, who ran for 929 yards last season. That is a respectable number, but it still was not as strong as his 1,238-yard season as a rookie.

The Bears needed to improve their running game in 2010 and also went out into free agency and signed Chester Taylor from the Vikings to add depth.

Taylor may be turning 30 during the 2010 season, but since he has primarily served as a backup for most of his career, he still has many miles left on his body before he wears out.

Also add the smaller yet speedy and elusive Garrett Wolfe to this list, and the Bears have a ton of diversity in running styles with the addition of Unga’s power running style.

With a gunslinger like Jay Cutler at quarterback and throwing the ball around to all parts of the football field, the Bears now have a good amount of depth in the backfield to take some pressure off Cutler’s shoulders.

With Cutler’s tendency to throw a few too many interceptions than Bears fans would like, the running attack will make the defense a bit more honest in playing both the pass and run rather than focusing on the pass.

The competition is very tough in the NFL North since both the Vikings and Packers are two very explosive teams, but the Bears look to be a player for the divisional title with their rebuilt running game now that they have a bull of a runner in Unga.
