Sam Hurd Arrest: Chicago Bears’ WR and Special Teams Star Won’t Be Missed

Chicago Bears WR and special teamer Sam Hurd is now famous for all the wrong reasons, and ones that pertain nothing to football. He’s infamous.

According to ESPN, “Sam Hurd was arrested in Chicago on federal drug charges Wednesday night, and the criminal complaint against him describes Hurd as regularly dealing large amounts of drugs in Chicago.”

Hurd’s short stint with the Bears was hardly impressive, however; he had a measly eight receptions for 109 yards in 12 games with Chicago before his arrest, and suffered his first career fumble with the Bears.

Quite frankly, he will not be missed.

The 26-year-old was a consistent special teams player, but failed to make any notable plays this season with Chicago after spending his four previous NFL years with the Dallas Cowboys.

It would be ridiculous to suggest that Hurd’s arrest is the only thing NFL fans will remember him by, but his on-field contributions to the game pale in comparison to the fact that he wanted to buy “five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area,” according to the ESPN report by Michael C. Wright.

Given that the Bears have already lost three-straight games since the season-ending thumb injury suffered by starting QB Jay Cutler back in November, the last three aren’t going to be easy, but with the negative attention currently surrounding their franchise, they have enough to rally around.

If star players going down for the season aren’t enough to motivate the Bears for a final playoff push, then salvaging their manhood and reputations may just do it.

Chicago has yet to prove they can stay afloat without superstars Jay Cutler or Matt Forte, but Sam Hurd will be the guy that wakes up Chicago’s locker room this Sunday at Seattle

The play of Sam Hurd won’t be missed by Brian Urlacher and the rest of the Bears, but the way their football team was perceived before his arrest will be.
