Sam Hurd Arrest: If Charges Are True, Bears Receiver’s Idiocy Hard to Stomach

Right now, there’s only one question I want to ask Sam Hurd, and it’s a simple one.

Dude, isn’t your day job good enough?

Evidently not. If you’re just now joining us, the Chicago Bears wide receiver was arrested in Chicago Wednesday night after federal charges claim that he accepted a kilogram of cocaine from an informant and an undercover federal agent, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

It gets worse. The feds says that Hurd accepted one kilo of cocaine and negotiated the purchase of five to 10 kilos of the drug along with 1,000 pounds of marijuana, agreeing to pay $25,000 for the cocaine and $450 a pound for the weed.

This wasn’t just a one-time thing. Hurd agreed to honor this arrangement once a week.

This was going to be a weekly thing.

It gets even worse. In the process of negotiating the purchase, Hurd admitted that he and another person had already been distributing about four kilos of cocaine in the Chicago area every week. He had to find a new supplier because his old one couldn’t meet his and his partner’s needs.

Believe it or not, it gets even worse. Matt Spiegel of 670 AM Radio in Chicago dropped this bombshell shortly after news of Hurd’s arrest broke:

If true, what we have here is not one rogue NFL player trying his hand at crime. What we have here is a bona fide drug ring.

More is going to come out about this story, and odds are it’s going to get even worse. We’re going to find out which players are on that list, and we may even find out that Hurd’s network extended beyond Chicago.

To be sure, this whole thing is bad enough as it is. There are any number of reactions a rational person like you or me could have, but the one thing I can’t get past is just how huge of an imbecile Sam Hurd really is.

When you play in the NFL, you don’t need to turn to a life of crime to make ends meet. This is true of rich players like Peyton Manning, Larry Fitzgerald and Chris Johnson, and it is true of fringe players like Hurd, whom the Bears use mainly on special teams.

Per Rotoworld, Hurd’s contract with the Bears is for three years and just about $4 million. An extra $1.18 million is available to him via incentives.

By NFL standards, that’s not a lot of money.

By regular standards, Hurd is a stinking rich millionaire.

If these charges are true, I have no choice but to speculate as to what led Hurd to get into the drug-dealing business. Perhaps he wanted to do something risky and exciting with his life. The more likely explanation, though, is that he just plain got greedy.

For shame, Mr. Hurd. If it’s more money you want, you could have pursued all sorts of other options.

Like, you know, becoming a better football player. The good ones tend to make some good money.

Instead, Hurd may have cast himself into a situation where his NFL employment will likely be stripped for good. To boot, the league is going to have a massive scandal on its hands if this list of players actually ends up being something concrete.

All because Sam Hurd decided to play at being Tony Montana.

Well, we know that Hurd is not going to experience the same bloody end as everybody’s favorite bad guy, but the message being sent is the same.

Crime doesn’t pay.

The part that makes you shake your head is that Hurd had to find out the hard way. He may have made a mistake that will ruin not just his true career, but his life as well.

Such a waste.
