Sam Hurd Arrest: Receivers Arrest Makes You Wonder If Other Players Are Involved

The Sam Hurd story is horrific enough, and it could get worse.
The Chicago Bears receiver has been arrested and charged with one count of conspiring to possess half a kilogram of cocaine with the intent to distribute it.
Wednesday night he negotiated with an undercover cop to buy 5-to-10 kilos of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana a week for distribution.
Key words there are “a week.” Not only is this an incredible amount of illegal drugs, he was distributing it at a rate that would classify him as a drug kingpin. Like Nino Brown in New Jack City kingpin.
This guy is not working alone. The question is: who else is involved?
Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher claims to have not really known Hurd very well according to the Chicago Tribune. The one player that would possibly be linked to Hurd is Roy Williams, who played with Hurd for three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys from 2008-2010 before both of them came over to the Bears.
Williams released this statement to the media:
It’s a situation I don’t want anyone to be in, especially a close friend, a teammate that I have been playing with now for four or five years now, especially a guy from Texas with a wife and daughter. So, it’s tough for me just because I am not into drugs or anything like that. I know it has to be tough for him because he has his family. It’s a choice he made and there are consequences with choices that you make.
There is no reason to think Williams was involved, but he has known Hurd better than any other teammate over the past few years.
None of his other teammates have attempted to step up and defend him.
Hurd first came up on the federal authorities radar in July when the confidential informant tipped off agents that a Hurd associate was attempting to coordinate the purchase of roughly four kilograms of cocaine in the Dallas area. The associate wanted to seal the deal that same day, so they could take the drugs north bound authorities charged.
All of the details have yet to be released on the case, but the one thing we do know is that Hurd has been running a drug ring for a while now. Every ringleader needs its minions and there are surely dozens working for Hurd.
Are any Cowboys’ or Bears’ involved? Did the lure of the quick buck sucker them into Hurd’s scheme? Until further details are released it’s pure speculation, but Williams’ is certainly a worthy candidate considering his history with Hurd.
Why do professional athletes deal with illegal drugs? Because they have the cash to afford buying such a large sum, and then re-sell it in smaller quantities for a higher price. Few people could afford the purchase Hurd was trying to make.
I have a bad feeling that this onion has yet to be skinned and we are going to be peeling back layer by layer in the coming days. We know Hurd isn’t the only one involved, but we don’t know if any of his associates play football on Sunday.
