Sam Hurd: Fallen NFL Player’s Stupidity Will Earn Him a Long Prison Term

Sam Hurd is about to spend a huge chunk of his life behind bars because of a series of alleged, increasingly stupid, decisions.
Andrew Brandt, of the National Football Post, reported the details of this decision making from an affidavit by a federal agent sworn under oath to tell the truth.
The story does not paint Hurd in the brightest of decision making lights.
What Should’ve Stopped Hurd
According to Brandt, on July 27th of 2011, a Hurd conspirator, TL, was on his way to purchase four kilograms of cocaine for Hurd.
As circumstances would have it, TL was setting up the meeting with a Homeland Security confidential informant.
On his way to this meeting, federal agents stopped TL on a routine traffic stop. Lo and behold they found a bag fool of cash—$88,000 to be precise.
At this point, again according to the affidavit cited by Brandt, Hurd sought to rectify the situation by calling the police and letting them know he was a football player and the money belonged to him.
He was simply sending out TL to get the car “detailed and maintained,” and that he had withdrawn the money from a bank account.
The problem with this—besides the incredibly disproportionate amount set aside for maintenance and detailing—is the fact that Hurd’s bank activity did not match up to the amount withdrawn.
His Unbelievable Foolishness
After that incident, Hurd should have know that he was going to be under surveillance. While he would have no way of knowing that he was dealing with an informant prior to this, he did no that he just fed federal agents bogus information regarding $88,000 in cash.
He had to have, and certainly should have, known they weren’t just going to let this slide.
Instead of taking this as a chance to back away, Hurd proceeded with business as usual. Brandt reported that the officer claims Hurd had TL try and several more attempts to make this deal.
Federal agents also busted four men that had Hurd’s cell number with texts talking about trafficking and money laundering.
All of this led up to the sting for which now Hurd is being charged for.
Sam had the golden opportunity to back away after the close call with the traffic stop. Instead he pushed forward, and in apparent reckless fashion.
It doesn’t take an attorney to see the folly here. Anyone who has ever watched Donnie Brasco, American Gangster, Scarface or countless other similar movies can see that there are so many doomed decisions here that it is hard to fathom.
Hurd’s Future
As Brandt tells us, Sam Hurd faces 40 years in prison for a charge of “knowingly, intentionally and unlawfully combine, conspire, confederate, and agree together, and with other persons known and unknown, to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams…of cocaine, a controlled substance.“
Unless he has something extraordinary to disprove the information in this affidavit he is going to be serving most of those 40 years.
