Sam Hurd May Be Eager to Fight Drug Charges, but Will He Ever Suit Up Again?

When Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on charges that he was a major drug trafficker in the Chicago area, the Bears acted quickly, cutting him from the team and distancing themselves from the situation as soon as possible. Now, Hurd claims he is eager to fight the charges and “show everyone the truth about him.”
Regardless of whether or not the charges will stick, there is very little chance that the 26-year-old receiver will ever suit up for an NFL team again. His name is now toxic, and no franchise will want to attach itself to someone who was, at the very least, associated with an operation that was looking to import huge amounts of cocaine and marijuana.
In addition to that, Hurd isn’t exactly a stud to begin with. He has been nothing more than a special teams player for most of his career. This season in 12 games, he had just eight catches for 109 yards and no touchdowns for the Bears. The Northern Illinois product has played in 74 games during his five-year career, and has hauled in just 53 passes for 739 yards and two touchdowns.
Unless he has a relative in the front office of an NFL team, there is no way Hurd will ever see the field in the league again. But he has much bigger things to worry about, since there is a very real possibility he will be spending a significant portion of his life behind bars.
I’d be willing to bet the only future Hurd has in football will come via some sort of The Longest Yard type scenario where he leads a rag-tag band of misfit inmates on a journey to learn something about themselves and each other on the gridiron.
Other than that, I’d say his football-playing days are pretty much over.
