UPDATE: Although he has not been convicted of a crime, and all charges are alleged, if the story that’s developed since the time I wrote this piece is true, this is a much larger issue than we first realized.
Hurd was charged with trying to set up a drug-dealing network after authorities arrested him with a kilogram of cocaine during a sting. Hurd told an agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area.
folks, that’s a LOT of drugs. If convicted, Hurd could be in jail for a long time.

That Dallas Cowboys connection certainly hasn’t been good this year for the Bears.
The latest ex-Cowboy player to make news for the wrong reasons is Sam Hurd, who “was arrested Wednesday night in Chicago on federal charges after allegedly attempting to purchase drugs from a North Texas supplier,” the Dallas Morning News reported.
Hurd had mainly been a contributor on special teams, and he has played well there. As a receiver, Hurd has only eight catches for 109 yards this season.
According to the report in the Chicago Tribune, the team said it was aware of the incident.
The former Northern Illinois University product played for the Cowboys the past five seasons, and was signed to a three year contract with the Bears in the offseason..
This has been a rough season for ex-Cowboys on the Bears roster.
Wide receiver Roy Williams has alligator arms and drops too many passes and Marion Barber had a much publicized brain cramp last Sunday by failing to stay in bounds. Then, he fumbled the ball in overtime.
The report states that “The investigation is being handled by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Dallas.”
Hurd’s situation, if true, is obviously much more serious that Williams or Barber, as his is an off-field incident that could affect his future, not only in football, but in life as a free man.
While you can’t really blame Bears GM Jerry Angelo for this one, here’s betting that he will be hesitant to bring in former Cowboys players this offseason.
