According to Jeremy Gornor and Vaugn McClure of The Chicago Tribune, Bears WR Sam Hurd was arrested and has some serious drug charges:
“Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was arrested Wednesday night outside a Chicago restaurant after he accepted a kilogram of cocaine from a confidential informant and an undercover federal agent posing as a drug supplier, according to federal charges filed Thursday in Dallas.“
Gorner and McClure continued:
“Hurd told the undercover agent and informant that he and someone else distributed about four kilograms of cocaine each week in the Chicago area but that their supplier wasn’t able to meet their needs, according to the criminal complaint.”
There’s even more to the story as reported by Jason Trahan of The Dallas Morning News. Hurd also had some connections in Texas:
“According to authorities, Hurd allegedly attempted to purchase drugs from a supplier here in North Texas, which is where the case will be adjudicated.”
And in an article by Gregg Rosenthal of NBC Sports, Rosenthal believes this is not the end:
“We suspect this story is only getting started, and it’s one that could get increasingly uncomfortable for the NFL. If Twitter is any indication, it’s already big news.”
To say this is shocking news is beyond a vehement understatement. One day a player virtually no one has ever heard of is just your average NFL backup and the next, he’s the biggest news story of the day and will be for the immediate future.
Also, if there’s anything we’ve learned from the past, this is far from over. Think back to what happened with current Eagles‘ QB Michael Vick.
When the story first broke it was big news and just kept getting worse and worse. The same can be said about Jerry Sandusky and Penn State. The only way Sam Hurd can prevent this from being bigger than it already is, is to admit everything as soon as possible to the authorities.
Hurd is already in way too deep to begin with, so to some extent, he has nothing to lose. It would help out the authorities and at the very least, clear his conscience.
We’ve seen it happen in different sports and regardless of how extreme or non-exteme the criminal act may be, those who clear the air early aren’t subject to nearly as much scrutiny later on.
Words cannot describe how shocking this is and if you were unaware of Sam Hurd before, you are definitely aware of him now.
