If there was any question as to what team has the NFL‘s best defense, it has resoundingly been answered by the Chicago Bears’ Week 9 performance.
The Bears marched down to Tennessee and dismantled the Titans to the tune of three fumble recoveries, a defensive score and only 12 points allowed.
Chicago now has 17 interceptions on the season and six defensive touchdowns. Toss in nine fumble recoveries and you have one of the most prolific fantasy football defenses in recent memory.
Let’s breakdown their fantasy outlook and analysis for the rest of the season.
Fantasy Outlook
There is no fantasy defense even close to Chicago at this point in the season. The Bears have at least one interception in every game this year and have allowed 20 points only three times.
However, Chicago’s defense will face two of its toughest tests of the 2012 campaign in the next two weeks, as the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers are on the schedule.
This does not mean you should hesitate to start Chicago’s defense in those games (you would actually be crazy to bench them), but to expect another outing like we saw against Tennessee would be far too optimistic.
San Francisco and Houston both have the type of rushing attacks that can challenge Chicago in ways it has not yet seen this season.
After those contests, the schedule gets somewhat easier, but the Bears cannot afford to coast. Chicago has meetings with all three divisional opponents, as well as games against the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.
Fantasy Analysis
The defensive prowess Chicago has exhibited thus far this season is truly astounding. The Bears can be counted on for multiple turnovers each week and rarely allow 20 points or more.
They give up fewer rushing yards than any team in football and allow the second-fewest points per game. Chicago may not be able to keep up quite this blistering pace as the season continues, but it is far and away playing the best defensive football in the NFL.
Do not dare trade this defense away for anything less than an RB1 or WR1. And if you are able to trade away anything less than those pieces to acquire this unit, do not hesitate to do so.
