What in the Sam Hurd Is Going on Here!

If criminal charges are true, former Bears WR Sam Hurd was prepared to buy 1,000 pounds of marijuana and five to 10 kilos of cocaine on a regular basis.  He had someone show up with $88,000 in cash and a car registered to him to make a purchase.

The best though is that after one of his soldiers—that’s what I am assuming he called them—was taken in, Hurd asked the police for his money back.  Asking for the money back might be enough to make one of those Spike TV shows, World’s Dumbest Criminals.

Look, this is flat out a very disturbing story.  This is Hollywood movie-type material!  The world of sports can now probably say we have seen it all.  From the looks of what Sam Hurd was up to, this guy was on his way to being a major drug lord.  Again this is all my opinion, but this is shocking.

The other thing that is blowing my mind is why do the Chicago Bears still have this guy on the roster?  What in the world are the McCaskeys thinking?  It’s obvious this guy is beyond just a slap on the wrist.  If I’m the owner of a franchise and one of my players is arrested by federal agents, that throws an immediate red flag.  Cut him on the spot.

Here is a guy who was going to make over $5 million in three years with the Bears, not to mention what he has made in the past with Dallas.  That’s a lot of dough.  That’s more dough than I’ll probably see in my lifetime.  So the question then is: What drives a man to do something like this?  What was going through his mind that made him think that he could become a kingpin in the drug world?

Hurd is married and has a daughter and thought nothing of that from what it seems.  The $5 million he was going to make with the Bears wasn’t enough to get his daughter into the finest schools? It wasn’t enough to live comfortably?  It wasn’t enough to have the finest cars and nicest clothes?  I don’t get it. I’m not sure I will because it’s mind-blowing that someone who is living the dream needed to turn to living a nightmare.

All the facts are still being determined and will probably take some time.  What scares me is if Hurd was running this, is it possible more players were involved?  Were teammates buying from Hurd?  According to 670 The Score (h/t CBS Chicago), there may even be a list that was passed along of NFL players who Hurd was supplying drugs to.  Can you imagine the fallout if this list exists, and what will come of this?

Jose Canseco threw MLB players under the bus for steroids, and at that time it was huge.  He took down people.  Players went to face the judge and we had to watch Mark McGwire try to claim his innocence.  Sam Hurd may have just brought down the NFL in an even worse way.  Explain to me how the NFL will work this one out.

What also drives me nuts is listening to the teammates of Hurd talk.  I heard Lance Briggs say how you don’t want to see this happen to anyone.  Then to say we all make mistakes. Are you kidding me!  If I’m Briggs or anyone I’m not giving it the old “mistakes” speech.  If charges are true, this guy is a scumbag.  He’s out there not just selling a few small bags of weed.  This guy is working to run extremely large amounts of cocaine and marijuana throughout the Chicagoland area and who knows where else in the United States?  This is the place these guys call home.

I’ll wait for more details as the case gets more information but at this point, I’m not sure I need more information. I’m just hoping the fallout doesn’t trickle down to something worse…if it can get worse.

Update: Hurd has been cut from the Bears.
