Why Brian Urlacher Is Justified in Calling Out Atrocious Bears Defense

Brain Urlacher had one of those “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more” moments after his defense got splattered all over Ford field on Monday night in that 24-13 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Hard to blame him as it’s looking very much like the Bears are the third dog in a two-dog division and they’re looking squarely at the hind quarters of Green Bay and Detroit.

Urlacher would surely be on your list of 10 people you wouldn’t want mad at you.

He was mad, real mad and had this rent as evidence:

“We’re playing like (expletive), that’s what’s going on. We’re not playing good. W’e’re not disciplined. We’re not into our gaps. We’re not physical. I don’t know how many yards that kid had. He probably didn’t even have 10 carries.”

That’s enough to get us started here.

Yes, “the kid” did pretty good. That would be Detroit running back Jahvid Best, who had a career night with 163 yards on 12 carries. Sorry Brian, you missed two of them.

Urlacher was no doubt ticked off by the big plays, two memorable ones. The first was that 73-yard pitch-and-catch that went from Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson.

Note to Urlacher: Calvin Johnson is burning EVERYONE, so don’t take it personally.

Later it was Best breaking one for 88 yards and that had to stick Urlacher hard.

“Definitely, we stink. We stop the run then we can’t stop the pass. We stop the pass then we can’t stop the run,” explained No. 54.

He’s right. The Bears haven’t done much on defense thus far to warrant anything more than their 2-3 record shows.

Makes it tough when you’re looking up at two 5-0 teams in Green Bay and Detroit.

Suffice to say the road to the NFC North isn’t going through Soldier Field this year.

There is some good news for the Bears looming on the schedule.

They face Minnesota next and the Vikings have the cure for what ails just about anyone.

After that, it’s Tampa Bay in London and the Buccaneers have had about as much luck in London as Mary Queen of Scots.

If nothing else, things can get better for the Bears and Urlacher can go from enraged to just plain pissed off.
