On a five-game winning streak and with playoff aspirations lingering, Jay Cutler’s thumb injury could not have come at a worse time for the Chicago Bears.

But the one bright spot to come out of this unfortunate injury is that Cutler is finally being supported by the city of Chicago. Sure, there are tons of people questioning the severity of this injury and the decision for Cutler to have surgery, but the majority of Bears fans know how physically and mentally tough their quarterback truly is.

They’ve seen what he’s been able to produce with a weak offensive line and practically no reliable receivers at his disposal. They’ve seen the hits, the knockdowns and the countless sacks he’s endured since becoming a Bear in 2009. And now they see something special.

Although it’s been an obvious setback, this injury has done something that Cutler could never have expected: It’s caused the city of Chicago to finally appreciate him.

The players on the team know how great Cutler is under center, but now the fans are finally coming to realize that he’s the best quarterback the team has had since Jim McMahon. In fact, what he’s been able to accomplish this season is practically incredible.

No one expected the Chicago Bears to be contenders this season, and yet, here they stand at 7-3 in arguably the toughest conference in the NFL. And even though Matt Forte is having a dynamite year, it’s painfully clear that the offense will struggle without Cutler.

The Bears’ passing attack this season, especially in the past few games, is unlike anything the fans have seen in years. It’s sophisticated, it’s precise and it was all finally coming together in beautiful harmony. That is, until it all came to a screeching halt this week with the news of Cutler’s fractured thumb.

But with that news came appreciation.

It’s sad that it took an injury for the fans to finally get behind Cutler, but it’s better late than never. And I’ll be the first to admit that I was late to jump on the Cutler bandwagon. But now I’m counting down the days until we can see him on the field again.

So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s gives thanks to Jay Cutler, because, in all honesty, he’s been a blessing for the Bears.
