…Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas.
Before I get started on my synopsis of why this should be the Bears pick, I wanted to say that the numbers I am using for the draft order may not be the correct pick.
The Bears picks will be decided by a coin flip, and could move down in the pecking order if they lose said coin flip.
But, even so, I would still think these picks will be around to make.
Now, on to my man Dezmon Briscoe.
He’s a big receiver, which is something the Bears so desperately need. He’s 6’3″ and weighs in at 210 lbs. That is a very good size for an NFL wide receiver.
The one glaring weakness in his game is that Kansas does not run a pro-style offense, which could hurt his transition into the pro game. At best, it might just delay his development but considering the wideouts we have on our roster now, I might be willing to take the chance on him developing late, as long as he develops into a great receiver.
His speed is not something to write home about (he runs about a 4.5 40), but with Devin Hester and Johnny Knox filling the speed void, the Bears don’t exactly need another burner on the outside.
They need someone who can run the inside routes and someone who can catch a slant and break a tackle. Or, someone who can work his way back to the quarterback on broken plays and make something out of nothing.
Another area that can help is the red zone.
The Bears were hoping that Greg Olsen would take on most of the red zone work, but sometimes it’s nice to have that big receiver on the outside that the quarterback can just throw the ball up to, and he can go up and get it.
Briscoe is a great red zone threat with just his size alone. I have not seen any official reports on his vertical leap, but seeing him in action, I would put an estimate at around 35-37,” which is an incredible number on the football field.
His route running skills aren’t the greatest, but that is something that can be coached. The same thing was said about Michael Crabtree and we all know the limitless potential he has.
I’m not saying that Briscoe is Crabtree-esque, but he does have great hands and amazing athleticism. He breaks tackles in the open field—a la Brandon Marshall—and he likes to catch the ball at its highest point, which might be a big help keeping Cutler’s interception totals down.
If Martz is going to open things up within the offense, this could be a great pick.
Briscoe worked out of the spread offense at Kansas, and not to say that Martz will run a spread offense, but getting himself open has not been an issue with him, so I think Martz could really do some big things with Dezmon Briscoe.
This draft has a lot of talent at WR, but a lot of the talented receivers are small in stature (6′ and under), so I’d like to see Briscoe be overlooked and drop to the Bears in the fifth round.
He is labeled as a fourth-to-fifth round talent, so it might be a stretch to have him land in the Bears laps, but fans can be hopeful.
