…Offensive Tackle Ciron Black, LSU.
Without having a pick in the first two rounds, the chances of getting an elite player are zero.
The chances of trading up to get a pick in the first two rounds are slim to none seeing as the Bears don’t have much to offer these days. And, even if they did trade away a player worthy of a first- or second-round draft pick, chances are it would hurt the team more than it would help.
So why not draft a player who was looked at as an “elite” player (by some) had he gone into the 2009 draft pool.
Black is big. He is 6’5″, 330 lbs. His strengths are his overall strength, technique, and experience. Those are all things the Bears offensive tackles lack right now. Especially when we are talking about technique.
The Bears can benefit from the Tigers having an off year and Ciron’s draft stock faltering due to that.
In all likelihood, he would be a “project.” He might take a year or two to develop into an above-average NFL OT. But, wouldn’t Bears fans like to take that type of a risk, rather than to just stick with what we have and hope they play better this year?
I do not believe that Black has the quickness or lateral movement to be a great left tackle (notice how I said great), but he could turn into a great right tackle, if not surprise everyone and work on his footwork to be able to play well at the left tackle position.
Simply said, he is looked at as a late second- to early third-round talent. And, if the Bears can scoop him up with the 75th pick, I think they would be pleased. At least I hope they would be. The talent pool is not excessively deep this year going into the third and fourth rounds, so the Bears are just going to have to hope to get lucky with some of their picks.
Coming tomorrow, my choice for the 110th pick…
